FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions…

1. How are you different from other cideries?

We are truly “Tree to Glass”. While other cideries source some of their juice from apples grown elsewhere in Kansas, we actually grow our apples ourselves, right between Rose Hill and Augusta. We are not only Kansas’s first hard cidery, but we are an Estate Cidery, meaning our apple juice comes from our own ‘estate’ or our own orchard. This brings customers the freshest and purest cider available in the region.

2. Do you have non-alcoholic drinks?

Yes! Year-round we make home-made root beer and sparkling apple cider. Both are on tap and non-alcoholic. In the fall, when we press our apples, we have half-gallon jugs of sweet cider that contains no preservatives or other additives. In the summer, we have lemonade slushies and other flavors.

3. Are dogs allowed?     Yes! This is a great place to bring your dog – but we do request you follow a few rules:

  • All dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.
  • Do no bring them inside the farm store or onto the store’s porch
  • Take them into the bushes to poop and leave it there (we don’t want the poop in our trash cans).
  • Please keep dogs away from goats and their guard dog (both are enclosed)

4. When is fruit ready to pick?     For details, please see the “Produce” tab of our website, but in general…..

Strawberries – May                Peaches – July & August                Apples – July – October                Pumpkins – October

5. Why do you charge an entrance fee?     While our entrance fee is minimal, it does help us cover the costs of public bathrooms, playgrounds, picnic areas, property tax and gravel for the parking lot. These costs are not covered by fruit or cider sales. Customers who make quick purchases in our farm store, without using our facilities, are not charged an entrance fee.

    6. Do you ever have concerts or music here?     Yes, we have about 4 concerts a year, but instead of concerts we call them “jams” as in “jam session”. We have a “Strawberry Jam” in May, a “Peach Jam” in July, an “Apple Jam” in September, and a “Pumpkin Jam” in October. They are at no extra cost over our normal entrance fee!

    7. Where else can I buy your cider?

There are several locations in and around Wichita that carry our cider. Please see our purchase locations under the “Cider” tab on our website. https://themeadowlarkfarm.com/hard-cider/#hard_cider_purchasing

    8. When is the orchard in bloom?     Peaches (pink) bloom at the end of March and apples (white) bloom early to mid-April. Weather has a big influence, so sometimes earlier, sometimes later. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the beginning of spring! Come for a walk in the orchard or for a photo shoot!

    9. Do you provide tours or give orchard classes?

Yes, for school tours, please see our “Adventures” tab on the website. https://themeadowlarkfarm.com/local-food-farm-tours-school-field-trip/

For orchard classes, we can offer these if you can get 5 or more people together who can pay for a couple hours of Tom’s expertise. You can email him at tom@themeadowlarkfarm.com.

    10. Do you spray? (are you organic?)  The short answer is “Yes, we spray” and “no we are not organic” BUT WAIT, THERE’s MORE!

While being organic in Kansas is nearly impossible due to the high number of pests that invade our fruit, we are extremely conscientious about this and spray less than the recommended schedule. We also pay close attention to safety and make sure no customers are in the orchard for a long while after orchard-care spraying occurs. We are careful to follow all legal guidelines, which the FDA and EPA have made very strict. We want to have high quality fruit for our customers and if we skipped spraying all-together, our fruit would only be available to worms, bugs, and deer.

    11. How long have you been here?

We bought the land in 2010; it did not have any fruit trees at that time. We have planted (and replanted) over 5000 trees by hand to develop the orchard you see today.

    12. What do you do in the winter?

We are open year-round, so you can visit the store for hard cider, jam, apple butter, salsa, etc. Customer traffic slower in the winter, but it is not a slow time for us or our employees! Pruning 5000 trees takes a lot of time, as does, planting, repairs, renovations, and cider making.

    13. Do you do weddings here?

While we can readily host birthday or business parties, or other gatherings, we are not equipped for weddings. We do not have air-conditioned rooms for the wedding party to prep, nor do we have enough chairs, etc. for this size of gathering.

    14. Do you sell trees?

No, but we can recommend the nurseries we buy from… Cumberland Valley Nursery, Cummins, Wafler, Vaughn and Adams County Nursery. They are not local so check them out online.

    15. Do you have food on site or can I bring food? We have a variety of snacks for purchase, but you are welcome to bring your own food! We are an awesome location for picnics. (Absolutely no outside alcohol however; this is enforced by law.) In October, we sell cider donuts on the weekends.
